Secrets of the Obscure is alright and all but am I the only one kinda miffed that they ripped off a lot of it from Dragon Age: Inquisition and didn't really add or change enough to be it's own unique thing?
even the rift hunting mechanic is Exactly The Same, because you Open the rift, then fight something then close it. the animation is almost 1-1 and even the eye in the rift looks like the Inquisition eye. if it wasn't for the fact that Even The Mechanic is the same I might not have noticed it so much, but the more I play the more blatant it feels
and then their wizard lore also just feels like how demons come out of the Fade in Dragon Age to possess mages. it's almost exact
disclaimer that I'm still enjoying it because it's fun and I like that we get to see Zojja again and have a better map for practicing skyscales for those who don't have one yet, but uh...this whole plot was stolen!
and yes I know there are certain fantasy tropes that re-occur in fantasy over and over, but this doesn't feel like that. it feels like the writers legit just snapped the base ideas from DAI and then barely added or changed anything to make it uniquely Guild Wars
imo it's definitely the weakest of all the packs
which is a shame because I LOVEDDDDD the intro. the whole sequence of having to defend yourself and run for your life was so ridiculously tense, I really felt like I was playing a horror game
but now I'm on Ep. 7 and all the potential feels wasted because I feel like I'm playing the underwritten fanfiction of another game that I already played 10 years ago and didn't like that much the first time
#guild wars#guild wars 2#gw2#secrets of the obscure#gw2 soto#I do really feel it's like#Ridiculously Blatant#like idk how they're getting away with it without everyone roasting them for plagarism blatant#like you can take core ideas like rifts and demon possession and make it into your own#but SOTO presents the idea and it just feels 1-1 like how it was in DA#and I think to myself oh well they'll build on it to make it unique probably!#but then every new bit of lore just makes me go#''oh like in Dragon Age??''#a lot of things haven't even been explained but the game acts like I should Just Know#and I wonder if it's because they figured ''well everyone probably played Dragon Age so they can figure it out'' lol#I hope Janthir Wilds feels more like a uniquely GW experience#because so far SOTO is prob my least fave pack#they can't all be bangers I get that#but also you could have made more of an attempt to tie things into GW world and make it unique#instead of just dumping all this new frankensteined lore from another franchise#and using “well lol it's all about the mists!” as an excuse for why it's so random and obviously borrowed from other media

twirls my hair absentmindedly.... i know i say i'll use this character and that character as my commander but making one is genuinely so hard for me! U_U each time i think i got something figured out i end up going to another character or idea.. its a bit fustrating...
#rambling#gw2#guild wars 2#i'd like to have just One Little Guy i can focus on for the story but there are so many possibilities and routes#and sure i can make alternative commanders but like#yaknow. choice paralysis. /lh#i may try just brewing ideas and throwing them at the wall to see what sticks! U_U#maybe i just need to figure out how i'd personally like to go about the story from a literary perspective#because i've only gotten as far as lws4 before the demons got me again /j#idk! lots to think about....#this sorta is why i've been taking a small break from playing gw2 and playing some ff14 ...

gotta say after playing through a good 40-50 hours of it at this point im really not understanding why people say guild wars 2's story is bad. it's a pretty good 7/10 so far
#it's not the best or deepest thing ive ever seen but like. when you actually play it and engage and pay attention to dialogue#it's honestly pretty well done. i think it even handles its early story parts (the part im at atm given i havent done heart of thorns)#comical levels of better than say. ffxiv's arr.#it's not SPECTACULAR but it's Good and i could see myself dissecting scarlet briar as a character like a biology person would a frog#i don't get why the subreddit dismisses it so much. then again reddit is a hellish place that we must never go simba#yin-thoughts#guild wars 2#mind you im halfway through lw2 so i dont actually have all the details. maybe rox turns evil for no reason and the writing nosedives idk

#opal.txt#i can't play a lot of games... yeah#once i got stuck in a chair in guilded wars and the ensuing shaking of my screen made me almost lose my lunch#shit ass body syndrome#i have to cap the fps of anything i watch. throttling it not bc my tech can't handle it but bc /i/ cannot physically handle it#this is why i like turn based stuff + visual novels + simpler games#and text + dialogue heavy games

they should do another expansion where the commander dies but this time they stay dead long enough (for w/e lore reason idc) that in the middle of this huge dramatic and very expensive cross-cultural funeral, they just kick off the coffin lid and stumble out in front of the 20 mile long funeral procession and are like “I’M FINE. I’M FINE. WHERE’S TH- wait what the FUCK is happening???”
#don't ask me why their body isn't in a state of detoriation#they used Magic Death Powers to overcome decomposition once they can do it again and for longer#guild wars 2#gw2#even funnier if the scenario is like#you give your life to save the world#but since yu're dead#you don't realise it's saved#and you're frantically trying to get back#but the player audience is aware the world is saved and this funeral thing is gonna happen#so it's just this big comedic epilogue for no reason#well not for totally no reason#I want to see everyone crying about you I think it'd be funny#and the commander is just like#this is really embarrassing actually don't do this when I actually die#[sylvari commander voice] just bury me in the grove to be re-absorbed by the dream#like a normal person#taimi: I was actually going to steal your corpse afterwards and see if I could play god to overcome death#taimi: I might still do that when this happens again :/#braham gets a tattoo that somehow symbolises you btw#prob in a very visible area#and now he has to live with that for the rest of your life#sorry for calling it a DLC instead of an expansion my brain farted

Living my best ranger engineer life right now by wielding a mostly useless shortbow and a very useful jade construct on a punk engi asura. Playing old OLD story.
Good times, right?
They were, but then, here is Tybalt, selling me apples.

hello guild wars 2 players. i want to play a game.
in front of you is a meta event where there's a less than ideal amount of players to complete it.
if, during the meta event, you complain about other player's DPS (damage per strike), anyone that might be AFK, or claim the meta is going to fail in the map chat: PVP against you and only you will be enabled. i will personally drop from the sky as a Power Reaper (extremely buff necromancer) and beat the shit out of you.
why? it's simple: if you are complaining in map chat about any of the above, YOU AREN'T DOING ANY DPS. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. HIT THE GODDAMN ENEMY.
you have fifteen minutes until the meta ends. the clock is ticking...

have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG guild wars 2 (buy to play without monthly subscription, base game is free, cash shop entirely usable with ingame currency) where we celebrate the engagement party of our two main party lesbians in the story, save a city alongside our agender engineer friend, our local autistic science rat publishes a paper on why the elder dragon of ice is to be referred to with they/them pronouns, and the devs march alongside us in the yearly pride march
(disclaimer this is a jab at the "have you heard of the critically acclaimed..." meme) (disclaimer 2 no i dont hate eff eff fourteen i am playing it too sometimes)

Seven Warlords of the Sea
*edit: because I like an idiot forgot Akainu didn't actually want the warlord program destroyed 😭
the real reason that Akainu *should have* voted for the destruction of the Warlord program is, besides them being filthy pirates, they were also just fucking embarrassing.
Like pathetically, how did we let this happen, embarrassing In the amount of time we have known them, between the 12 total Shichibukai;
4 of them got their asses beat by the same dude (1 of them before he even became a warlord)
2 of them went on to openly work for/ with said dude
1 of them literally fell in love with and actively sabotages efforts to apprehend this same dude
At two separate points they have actively tried to recruit (and succeeded once) the sons of two of their biggest ops.
Not to mention how 1 of them also got their ass beat by said dude's brother and then they would lose 3 more on the same day over the war for the life of said brother who was the same son they tried to recruit
2 of the Warlords would then go on to harbor/ mentor a member of this dude's crew and the dude himself! Arguably when he was the most wanted criminal alive. While the member that should have been the most robotically compliant protected the dude's pirate ship with his life.
They got played four different times on a world stage by 4 different members and 3 of said times all involved THIS SAME DUDE!
2 of the times involving the take over of a country that was then foiled by said dude while the marines did nothing.
They've had to imprison 2 of them and brainwash a 3rd
They've had to shop for replacements 7 whole times just in the span of 3 years
At no point have all seven members attended a meeting. Hell Hancock has attended not a one.
During the months before their disbandment there weren't even 7 of them! there were only 5
They are pretty sure 1 of them is fucking an emperor, 1 of them was working for an emperor, 1 of them might be (it is unconfirmed) the illegitimate son of a now dead emperor and another is protected by The actual fucking Dark King.
They literally had to fire Moria for being a fucking embarrassment
And one of them is a fucking clown
that would go on to recruit 2 other former warlords to create a guild that encourages the hunting of marines for sport and rise to the ranks of emperor.
Of course Akainu hates their fucking guts. They are quite literally the stupidest group of people he has ever had to work with in his life and they seem to bring out new levels of previously unreached stupidity in the marines! Just a cesspool of failure and incompetency trying to call itself a program.
95% of the reason Sengoku retired was to get away from these fucking idiots. He was drowing in the sea of paperwork Mihawk alone was causing not to mention the rest of their dumbasses and Akainu isn't about that life.
And that brings me to reason number 184 of why Akainu *should have* voted yes on disbanding the warlords
dealing with the fucking paper work storm and international incident that hit Sengoku's desk everytime Mihawk decided that needing to be fucked outweighed being subjected to an idiot. Nah Akainu needed them gone like yesterday.
#fucking cartoon ass villians the lot of them#I know it was techically Fujitora that brought up the bill but i like to think he did it for some true sense of justice and accountabilty#but as Fleet Admiral I'm pretty sure Akainu got a vote at the reverie and he for damn sure should have voted yes#this doesn't even compare to how much of an embarrassment he thinks garp is#but Akainu cant do anything about that but prey sincerely his heart gives out in a fist fight one of these days#fujitora issho#one piece admirals#akainu sakazuki#red haired shanks#seven warlords#dracule mihawk#boa hancock#donquixote doflamingo#bartholomew kuma#trafalgar law#buggy the clown#cross guild#mishanks#hawkeye mihawk#sir crocodile#monkey d. luffy#marshall d teach#and so on and so forth....even typing their names is exhausting#one piece funny#buggy one piece#throwing thoughts to the void#warlords of the sea#one piece shitpost#straw hat pirates#one piece marines

Homestead Essentials: Living in Janthir Wilds (link)
Text:
Greetings, Tyrians! Gather around the fire and settle in as we chat with Andrew Gray and Joel Eckert, two of the designers working to bring you one of the newest features in Guild Wars 2®: Janthir Wilds™. Today, they’ll conjure a magical doorway and take us on a tour of Homesteads.
With the launch just a few weeks away, we’re excited to answer some essential questions that will help you on your journey to turn a plot of land into a home. In the next few weeks, be sure to check out our social media channels for inspiring homestead designs, and join us soon for a livestream where we’ll explore Homesteads even further. For now, we’ll be covering some of the general Homesteads information that you’ll need to know.
Q: How do I get my homestead?
A: The story of Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds will introduce you to the plot of land that you will tend to and claim as your homestead.
Q: How do I access my homestead?
A: Once your homestead is unlocked, you’ll have access to a Summon Conjured Doorway Mastery skill. Any character on your account can conjure a doorway and simply step through into the homestead.
Q: Can friends visit my homestead?
A: Yes, you can invite your party members to your homestead via your conjured doorway. Players who are not in a party can use the door to request a party invitation from the door owner, and the owner interacting with the door will initiate the instance-transfer countdown. You can even give your visitors permission to help decorate your homestead!
Q: Can I return to my original location (the place I entered from) when I exit my homestead?
A: Yes, you’ll find a familiar instance exit button on the lower right of your screen that will return you to your previous location. This will even persist across sessions, so if you log out and log back in to your homestead to take advantage of the homestead’s resting bonus, upon logging back in, the instance exit button will return you to your last open-world location. This will not persist if you visit another instance, though.
Q: What can I unlock for my homestead?
A: As you progress your Homesteading Mastery, you’ll unlock more rooms within your homestead to decorate. You can also unlock improvements to your lumber mill, mine, and farm facilities. Because upgrades and spawns for your personal story home instance carry over to the homestead, you can also collect various gathering nodes, convenience features, and characters like the hungry cats.
And, finally, you can unlock decorations through the handiworker discipline, which is a refined, account-wide crafting ability.
Q: Can we control where unlocked nodes spawn?
A: Things like resource nodes, cats, and chests are placed in predetermined areas to ensure they all function properly.
Q: Where do homestead decorations come from?
A: Handiworker is the new crafting discipline that will be used to create decorations. New decorations are unlocked via Mastery points spent in the Homesteading Mastery line.
Q: Tell me more about handiwork, the new personal version of guild scribing.
A: Handiwork functions very similarly to scribing, but it is designed and balanced for a single player to be able to craft things on their own. There is a material cost for each copy of a decoration that you craft, but the prices for personal decorations via handiworker crafting are significantly lower.
Q: Why is handiworker crafting part of a Mastery line and not leveled like other crafting disciplines?
A: Since your homestead is account bound, we also wanted your handiworker crafting discipline to be account bound. We also wanted to create a stronger synergy between the content of Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds and your homestead, so, rather than reaching higher levels of the crafting discipline by crafting more decorations inside your homestead, you’ll instead do so by playing the rest of the Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds content and earning regular experience points.
Q: How do I decorate my homestead?
A: A “Decorate” button on the heads-up display or the skill panel will activate decorating mode.
In this mode, players have access to various skills on the skill bar for placing new decorations, modifying already placed decorations, or removing decorations. Additionally, you can enter a flying mode that allows placement of items anywhere a player normally cannot reach.
We’ll be demonstrating homestead decoration live on Twitch this Friday, August 2, at noon PDT (UTC-7). Join us to catch the placement tools—which include a Toggle X-Ray Vision skill and flying mode—in action.
Q: How do the characters on my account interact with the homestead?
A: When you exit to the character selection screen while inside your homestead, the character you were playing will be visible in your homestead as an NPC while you play other characters. These NPC versions of your characters default to one of three predetermined locations in the homestead, based on whether they are soldiers who wear heavy armor, adventurers who wear medium armor, or scholars who wear light armor.
Soldiers are found around the main homestead structure and the entry area near the portal.
Adventurers are found on the far side of the river near the main homestead building, in a wilder area.
Scholars are found in and around a secluded cave away from the main homestead, which is perfect for concentrating.
If you approach any of these logged-out alternate characters, you can ask them to follow you and lead them elsewhere. When you’re ready for them to stay put again, you can ask them to stay, and they’ll stop following.
Q: Will all of the characters I leave in the homestead when I log out show up? Can I control which ones show up or disable them?
A: All characters left within the homestead when you log out will be visible when you’re playing other characters.
Q: Can we control the appearance and dyes of mounts in the stable? How are those chosen?
A: Mounts housed within the mount stable will have the same skin and dye settings used by the player character that is currently accessing the homestead. The skiff’s dye and skin are controlled by the same means.
Q: Will there be a livestream to show off Homesteads?
There will be a livestream! As we mentioned above, we’ll be showing off the design elements and finer details of the Homesteads feature on our Twitch channel, on August 2 at noon Pacific Time (UTC-7). We hope to see you there!
Prepurchasing any edition of Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds before the expansion launches will grant you the “Homesteader” title, the Whispering Serpents Pauldrons skin, and a box with your choice of one Serpent’s Wrath weapon skin.
Visit the official store page for full details on the items included in the Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions.

You play guild wars a lot right? Have you ever accidentally come across Dan?
this used to be a bit of a touchy subject cause some less than great phannies would stalk him in game many years ago which caused people who don't play it to assume everyone who did was doing it to follow dan around which like. oh my god i can't imagine anything worse. because yeah i've run into him a few times and it's TERRIFYING. i don't know why, it shouldn't be, i have every right to play the game and if we end up in the same place that's perfectly fine but it still feels like i'm breaking some sort of international law
usually i run in the opposite direction if i see him (which has only happened like twice to be fair) bc in my head he's gonna magically know the random player walking by is a phannie and strike me down, but one time i was in the lfg (looking for group) trying to find a squad doing daily bounties and one popped up so i joined and immediately after joining i saw the name of the commander (person leading the squad, which is an up to 50 player group) and Wow Guess Who. i really needed to do my dailies though so i was like what the fuck ever, lets go. thanks dan for the lead i guess. i got downed once during it and he revived me and we had the very thrilling exchange of 'ty' 'np :)' so i guess i can genuinely say danisnotonfire saved my life
#u don't understand i live in constant fear of that man#but i started playing in 2013#and i've only seen him like thrice in 10+ years#so logically i know the chances are slim. but he still scares me#answered

finished the base game of gw2 today!! honestly i went in expecting an experience equivalent to ffxiv's arr and was very pleasantly surprised by it. i'd give the personal story a solid 6.5/10 relative to usual mmo plots, though it's more realistically a 5.5/10 relative to normal rpgs. really looking forward to seeing how living world and expansion content pans out
#i feel like it's the same as arr in the sense that it's Just Competent. it tells an okay-to-mid story and it tells that#probably better than ffxiv's own base game ever did#i enjoyed it. i know and understand why they apparently dropped the choose-your-quest sort of structure later on#but it made for a very fresh and organic experience while leveling and i like it!! made me feel pretty connected to my sylvari#yin-thoughts#guild wars 2#every so often yin posts about a game nobody follows him for unprompted and everyone has to deal with it.#honestly maybe my standards for mmo plotlines are especially low. i HAVE played WoW for years. and i do unironically like (most of) arr#but i digress
